Authorities in the UAE frequently urge pedestrians to use designated crossing areas, implementing strict penalties for jaywalking and enhancing road safety laws. Despite these measures, some individuals still dash across roads to save time.

The Sharjah police have released a video showing an accident where a man runs across a pedestrian crossing as a car nears, resulting in a fatal collision.

Although the man used the designated crossing, it seems he did so while the light was green for vehicles. Authorities remind the public that nearly every accident report starts with the same issue—unsafe crossing.

Jaywalking Fines

A new traffic regulation, effective March 29, imposes hefty fines and potential jail time for jaywalking across the UAE, defined as crossing at unauthorized locations.

Prior to March, the jaywalking fine was Dh400. Under the new law, offenders could face imprisonment and fines ranging from Dh5,000 to Dh10,000 if an accident occurs due to their actions.

Moreover, those crossing from non-designated areas on roads with speed limits of 80kmph or higher will incur stiffer penalties. These violations carry fines starting at Dh10,000 and imprisonment of at least three months, or one of these penalties.
