Discipline, resilience, and a renewed sense of purpose are the enduring values embraced by the UAE’s 22nd National Service cohort. After concluding the 11-month mandatory program on August 1, 2025, these high school graduates reflected on how the experience reshaped their perspectives and equipped them for challenges beyond the parade ground.
“I learned more in 11 months than I did in 12 years of school,” shared Saif Saeed Alkyeli, describing his transformation. In an interview with Khaleej Times, he expressed how the experience exceeded his expectations. “I anticipated strict discipline and rigorous training, but the brotherhood and unity we formed were most impactful. I began to truly appreciate time and discipline like never before.”
Mandatory under Federal Law No. 6 of 2014, National Service is required for Emirati men aged 18 to 30, with female volunteers also welcomed. Cabinet Resolution No. 15 of 2022 currently sets the duration at 11 months for high school graduates and volunteers. Since its inception in 2015, the program has aimed to foster national unity and civic duty among Emirati youth.

A decade later, its transformative impact on thousands is evident. For Batch 22, profound lessons often emerged from unexpected moments rather than drills. Alkyeli recalled one training incident: “A teammate collapsed from exhaustion, and without hesitation, we all carried him. That moment redefined teamwork for me — success is collective, not individual.”
For Abdulrahman Alwaleed, resilience was the key lesson. “The biggest change in me is resilience. I’m calmer under pressure now. Be it work, study, or life, I know I can manage it.”
Others discovered their leadership potential. “I expected it to be about drills and physical training,” said Saif AlMaskari. “But we were given real responsibilities to lead our peers. It showed me leadership is about trust and accountability.”
Batch 22’s growth was symbolized during the landmark “Stand of Loyalty” parade in December 2024, marking the 10th anniversary of the UAE Armed Forces and a decade of the National Service program. Batch 22 stood as a testament to its enduring impact.
The perseverance lessons continue to guide them. Alwaleed recalled a memorable challenge: “It was pouring rain, and the course seemed impossible. We finished soaked and exhausted, but with smiles. Hardship always ends with pride and honor.”
The changes extend far beyond their service period. “I’ve become more responsible and mature,” Alkyeli reflected. “My goals are clearer, and I’ve learned to value every moment, whether at work or with family.”
The graduates are eager to guide the next recruits. “Don’t be afraid,” advised AlMaskari. “This experience will shape you positively. You’ll discover hidden strengths and become more patient, disciplined, and proud.”
As Batch 22 moves forward, its members pursue diverse paths. Some are heading abroad for university studies, while others enroll in military colleges to build on their service. Meanwhile, the 24th batch will start its journey on August 31, 2025, ready to embrace the same transformative challenge.
