According to Western media reports citing informed sources, the majority of the 20 members of the UEFA Executive Committee tend to support the proposal, which could open the door to suspending Israel’s participation in international competitions under the union. However, ambiguity remains regarding the position of FIFA, which has the final say in matters concerning the World Cup tournaments. The close relationship between FIFA President Gianni Infantino and US President Donald Trump, along with American support in organizing the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is seen as an influential factor that might lead FIFA to avoid any decision against Israel.

In a symbolic move, the Norwegian Football Association announced it would donate ticket revenues from its match against Israel, scheduled for October 11 in Oslo, to Médecins Sans Frontières in support of humanitarian efforts in Gaza.

On the other hand, the Israeli government, the Ministry of Sports, and the local football association have confirmed they are making intensive efforts behind the scenes to obstruct any decision to freeze their membership in UEFA. Sports and Culture Minister Miki Zohar stated that the issue is being handled delicately to avoid escalating the situation.

International demands have increased in recent weeks, especially after a report by a United Nations Human Rights Council committee accused Israel of committing “genocide” in Gaza. Indicating a hardening of positions, the recent European Super Cup match between Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham saw banners inside the stadium reading: “Stop killing children. Stop killing civilians,” reflecting growing public anger over the Israeli war on Gaza.
