The Ukrainian parliamentarian indicated that due to the significant spending on defense and reconstruction after the war, Ukraine will request to delay or temporarily reduce its contributions to the European Union budget. These contributions are part of the collected value-added tax and are calculated based on the gross national income.

Pedlasa explained: “The contribution will consist of customs duties (member states retain only 25% of customs duties for themselves and transfer 75% to the EU budget), a value-added tax (0.3% of the collected VAT), and a cash contribution proportional to the size of the gross national income.”

Orban had previously stated that Brussels wishes for Ukraine to join the European Union by 2030, but the final decision rests with Hungary. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto had previously declared that he does not believe in Ukraine’s ability to meet the standards.
