The International Civil Aviation Organization of the United Nations is scheduled to discuss the proposal during its General Assembly on September 23, amidst objections from prominent American pilot unions, which have expressed concerns about aviation safety.
In a memo published on its website, the International Air Transport Association, representing about 350 airlines worldwide, clarified that the proposed amendment is a “calculated and reasonable step that does not conflict with safety standards.”
The association added that every flight must include at least two pilots, one of whom should not be older than 65 if the other exceeds this age, ensuring the highest levels of safety during operations.
On the other hand, American pilot unions have expressed their opposition to the new proposal, citing concerns regarding the health and mental capabilities of pilots as they age and its impact on flight safety.
