The “Al-Wasat Gate” reported this Sunday morning that the UN mission has worked to ensure that citizens exercise their right to elect representatives for their municipal councils across all regions of Libya through a peaceful, inclusive, and transparent process. The UN mission congratulated 26 Libyan municipalities on the successful municipal council elections held yesterday, where the initial participation rate reached 71%, noting that the elections were conducted in an organized and peaceful manner.
The UN mission urged all parties to maintain calm and handle any potential grievances through legal channels as the vote-counting process is completed and the electoral materials are transferred to the offices of the High National Elections Commission.
The mission welcomed the decision of the High National Elections to resume the voting process in 7 municipalities in the Az-Zawiya area on August 23, following the deliberate destruction of electoral materials by arson yesterday.
Libya has been experiencing a complex political crisis since 2011, amid a deep political and institutional division, with one government in Tripoli in the west of the country, the Government of National Unity, and the other in Benghazi in the east of the country, appointed by the parliament. This division is accompanied by a duplication in sovereign institutions, most notably the legislative authority represented by the House of Representatives in Tobruk and its advisory partner according to the Skhirat Agreement, and the High Council of State in Tripoli.
