The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees announced that its teams are providing support to survivors of what its spokesperson, Filippo Ongaro, described as a “painful repeated drowning” in a social media post. He noted that 20 bodies were found and a similar number are missing, according to Western media. The boat was carrying 97 people when it sank 14 miles southwest of Lampedusa. An Italian financial police aircraft spotted the capsized boat from the air, while 60 survivors were brought to safety on the island, and between 12 and 17 people are missing. Details remain limited so far, reflecting the challenges authorities face in handling such incidents. The Central Mediterranean route, taken by migrants to Italy, is considered one of the most dangerous migration routes in the world due to the use of dilapidated and overcrowded boats. The UN Refugee Agency has counted 675 deaths on this route since the beginning of the year, while the Italian Interior Ministry has recorded the arrival of 38,263 migrants on the country’s shores so far in 2025.
