On Monday, the United States Air Force Chief of Staff announced plans to retire in the coming months, without specifying a reason.

General David Allvin’s announcement was unexpected as he will have served only two years out of a typical four-year term by the time of his retirement.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve as the 23rd Air Force Chief of Staff. I appreciate Air Force Secretary Meink, Secretary Hegseth, and President Trump for their trust in my leadership,” Allvin stated.

Allvin mentioned he plans to retire around November 1.

It remains unclear if Allvin’s retirement is voluntary or influenced by Pentagon leadership, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The Office of the Secretary of Defense has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Since taking office in January, Hegseth has dismissed several senior military officials, including the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the US Navy head, and the judge advocates general for the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
