Steve Simoni, CEO of Allen Control Systems, a company specializing in defense robotics, stated in a speech that the United States lags behind competitors like China and Russia in dealing with how cheap drones are reshaping the nature of warfare, according to a US website. Simoni mentioned that the proliferation of drones has been a game changer for the US military, as war has become accessible to almost any party due to these low-cost methods, while US forces sometimes have to use expensive missiles to intercept drones that cost only a few thousand dollars.
Simoni called for accelerating the integration of artificial intelligence into weapons, emphasizing that “within the next five to ten years, every weapon on US ships, tanks, and trucks should be replaced with versions equipped with AI capabilities able to destroy drones.” He noted that public opinion is concerned about introducing AI into weapon systems, but he sees it as an “urgent necessity.”
Furthermore, he pointed out that the US Department of Defense has heavily invested in electronic systems to disable drones remotely, but adversaries like Russia make it difficult to jam them.
