The Syrian news agency “SANA” reported from a security source that the incident occurred after a patrol in the city of Tartus suspected a suspicious car parked by the roadside. When the patrol members approached to inspect it, someone inside the vehicle opened fire directly at the security personnel, resulting in the death of two officers. The security source added that the unidentified gunmen fled, while the relevant authorities are working to pursue the car and identify the perpetrators to arrest them and bring them to justice. It is noteworthy that last July, violations committed on the Syrian coast were documented, with 938 eyewitness testimonies on what happened in March. These violations included attacks on civilians and government forces in the provinces of Latakia, Tartus, and Hama, where lawyer Yaser Al-Farhan stated that the committee confirmed the killing of 1,426 people (including 90 women), most of whom were civilians, in addition to 238 security and military personnel. The committee also identified 265 suspects from armed groups (remnants of the former regime) and documented violations such as extrajudicial killings and burying victims in mass graves. The committee relied on field investigations, meetings with local and international parties (such as the United Nations and Human Rights Watch), and examination of digital evidence. It also pointed out widespread but unorganized violations, with varying behavior among the militants. The coastal areas (Latakia, Tartus, and Banias) witnessed violent events and deadly confrontations on March 6, affecting civilians and public security personnel. The government blamed gunmen loyal to former President Bashar al-Assad for the attacks on its forces and the execution of dozens of them, while security personnel were accused of committing violations against civilians, burning, and looting homes.
