The West Indies have brought back batters Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Alick Athanaze for their upcoming two-Test series in India next month, leaving out former captain Kraigg Brathwaite from the 15-man squad.

Left-arm spinner Khary Pierre has been called up for his debut Test as the West Indies prepare for spin challenges in India.

“Tagenarine Chanderpaul’s return aims to strengthen our top order, addressing recent issues. Alick Athanaze joins for his skills against spin,” head coach Daren Sammy stated on Tuesday.

“Khary joins as our second spinner in conditions we expect to favor spin,” Sammy added.

Vice-captain Jomel Warrican will lead the spin attack as Gudakesh Motie rests in preparation for the Twenty20 World Cup next year.

“Playing in the subcontinent is always challenging, and we’ve selected a competitive team for these conditions,” Sammy noted.

Brathwaite scored just 15 runs in four innings against Australia before being dropped for the series finale in Kingston, where the visitors secured a 3-0 win.

The first Test in India is set for Ahmedabad starting October 2, with the second in Delhi from October 10.
