Since six in the morning, around 400 Syrian displaced persons began arriving at the sports city in Beirut, where the organizing bodies managed the process of their departure. Trucks were prepared to transport luggage, while buses will transport the displaced persons to Syria as part of today’s scheduled convoy.
In this context, Lisa Abou Khaled, spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Lebanon, told Sputnik: “Today, we witness the return of the fifth group from the organized return program of the Commission, in partnership with the International Organization for Migration and the Lebanese General Security. This batch includes 400 people from Beirut heading to Aleppo, Homs, Hama, and Idlib via the Masnaa crossing. Buses and trucks will work on transporting them with their belongings.”
She added: “So far, since the beginning of the year, about 300,000 Syrian refugees have returned to Syria, a significant portion of whom returned before the start of the voluntary return program. There are still about 180,000 people who have contacted us expressing their desire to return, and we continue to implement our program.”
