Picture arriving at Zayed International Airport and boarding a modern electric aircraft that takes off vertically, smoothly flies above the skyline, and lands you in the city center or another emirate in just minutes. This is the future that Abu Dhabi Airports is crafting.

On Tuesday, the company revealed plans to lead the creation of a network featuring over 10 vertiports at major urban and transit spots, setting the foundation for a new air taxi system using electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

The initial phase focuses on Zayed International Airport (AUH) and Al Bateen Executive Airport (AZI), establishing the first direct routes to enhance airport-to-city connectivity. While initial routes will be short due to current battery limits, future technology improvements are anticipated to enable connections to Al Ain and inter-emirate travel.

The battery-operated, piloted eVTOLs will accommodate up to four passengers, providing a cleaner, quieter alternative to traditional helicopters. With a noise level approximately 100 times quieter than helicopters, these aircraft will cause minimal disturbance while supporting the UAE’s goal for sustainable, low-emission transport innovation.

The first flights are projected for 2026, with Abu Dhabi Airports managing the infrastructure, operations, and commercial readiness of the network as part of a new mandate.

“This mandate is a bold vote of confidence in our ability to drive the future of next-generation mobility,” said Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Abu Dhabi Airports. “With advancing technology and the rising demand for efficient, green mobility, air taxis are a natural extension of our role as an airport operator. Our strong partnership with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office, Integrated Transport Centre, and the General Civil Aviation Authority has been crucial in turning this ambitious vision into a reality, paving the way for a more connected, innovative, and sustainable future for the UAE.”

Abu Dhabi Airports has teamed up with Skyports Infrastructure for the design, construction, and engineering of each vertiport. Upon completion, they will work together on operations, including passenger handling, security processes, cargo management, and integration with eVTOL operators. Skyports is developing similar projects in the UAE and internationally.

“This vertiport network is a crucial element of Abu Dhabi’s AAM strategy,” stated Duncan Walker, CEO of Skyports Infrastructure. “With Skyports already involved in active vertiport projects in the UAE and beyond, we believe we are well-positioned to utilize our expertise to bring the benefits of AAM to the UAE’s largest emirate. We are eager to facilitate eVTOL flights in Abu Dhabi soon.”
