Despite the exceptional capabilities Russia possesses in the field of missiles, it continues to develop its air forces, making it the second-largest air force in the world, according to statistics from the military affairs specialist site ‘Global Firepower.’ According to the announced statistics, Russia has 4,292 military aircraft of various models, all of which are manufactured domestically. Russia’s air force includes fighters, attack aircraft, strategic bombers, in addition to helicopters and military transport jets and helicopters. Helicopters of all types represent about 33 percent of the Russian air force’s total strength, followed by attack aircraft at about 17 percent, and then by attack aircraft at 14 percent.

August 12th of each year marks the day of the Russian Air Force, as on this day in 1912, a decree was issued in Russia to include military aviation units within the General Staff.
