In a significant medical advancement, a hospital in Abu Dhabi has successfully performed a liver transplant on a patient with colorectal liver metastases, a form of colon cancer that had reached the liver.
This intricate procedure was executed at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi on a 40-year-old Jordanian patient. Initially diagnosed with colon cancer in 2019, the cancer had spread to the liver and resisted standard treatments.
This milestone signifies a major leap in cancer and transplant care within the region.

“By introducing advanced, specialized treatments to the region, we’re enhancing patient outcomes and providing new hope for those facing rare and complex conditions,” stated Dr. Georges-Pascal Haber, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.
Dr. Luis Campos, a Staff Physician in Abdominal Transplant at the Digestive Disease Institute, emphasized the procedure as a crucial milestone, reflecting their dedication to advancing complex care and expanding the possibilities of transplantation.
Dr. Josep Yuba, a Consultant in Abdominal Organ Transplantation, highlighted the complexity of the case, noting the cancer’s persistent return despite multiple surgeries and intensive chemotherapy.
He explained that chemotherapy often only temporarily controls the disease, eventually losing efficacy, allowing cancer growth. With the cancer extensively spread in the liver, further surgery was not viable, as it would leave an inadequate portion of the liver.
Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s first multi-organ transplant center, is recognized as a leading global transplant center, having completed over 100 liver transplants in 2024 and 360 since the program’s inception in 2017.
