Weekend border clashes between Afghanistan and Pakistan resulted in dozens of soldier fatalities, marking the most significant conflict since the Taliban’s 2021 takeover in Kabul. This incident drew the attention of US President Donald Trump. By Monday, the hostilities had ceased.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Late Saturday, Taliban forces launched attacks on Pakistani military posts along the 2,600km border, prompting retaliation from Pakistan. Fighting continued into Sunday with guns, artillery, and drones involved. Pakistan reported 23 soldiers dead, while the Taliban claimed nine of its fighters were killed. Both sides alleged greater casualties on the opponent.
WHAT CAUSED THE FIGHTING?
Last week, Pakistan conducted an airstrike on Kabul, targeting the Pakistani Taliban’s leader, according to Pakistani officials. It remains uncertain if the target survived. The Taliban stated their attack was retaliation for the Afghan airspace violation.
WHO ARE THE PAKISTANI TALIBAN?
In 2007, militant groups from Pakistan’s Pashtun regions formed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), inspired by the Afghan Taliban. Unlike their counterparts, the TTP adopted Al Qaeda’s radical ideology. The TTP attacked various sites within Pakistan, including the tragic 2014 school massacre in Peshawar. Military efforts have largely pushed the group into Afghanistan.
WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THE TALIBAN TOOK AFGHANISTAN?
Pakistan initially welcomed the Taliban’s return in 2021, with then Prime Minister Imran Khan praising Afghan independence. However, attacks by the TTP in Pakistan have surged. Islamabad accuses the Taliban of harboring TTP leaders and fighters in Afghanistan, which Kabul denies.
Pakistan’s influence over the Taliban has diminished, and the country claims its patience is wearing thin.
WHY IS PAKISTAN ALSO ACCUSING INDIA?
Pakistan accuses India of collaborating with Afghanistan to support militants like the TTP against Pakistan, a claim India denies. Recent diplomatic developments between Afghanistan and India have heightened Pakistan’s concerns.
WHAT HAS TRUMP SAID?
“I hear there’s a war now going on between Pakistan and Afghanistan,” Trump commented on Sunday during his Middle East trip. “I’ll have to wait till I get back. You know, I’m good at solving wars.”
