Tomeka Thiam, the wife of singer Akon, has initiated divorce proceedings just four days shy of their 29th anniversary.
Documents acquired by People reveal that Thiam filed on September 11, citing irreconcilable differences and leaving their separation date as “TBD.” The couple has a 17-year-old daughter, Journey.
Thiam seeks joint legal custody of Journey, but wishes for physical custody, allowing Akon visitation rights. She also requests spousal support while opposing any for Akon.
Akon has expressed his views on polygamy, stating in a 2022 interview with People that he has nine children and sees polygamy as integral to his “African culture.”
“[Polygamy is] part of our culture. Absolutely,” Akon stated.
“For me, it’s normal because it’s part of our culture. We didn’t abandon our African traditions upon entering the Western world. The Western world’s mistake was making rules without considering nature,” he explained.
“My role isn’t to handle all the extras, like holidays and recitals. While ensuring my family has shelter and food, if time permits, I’ll show love,” he noted. “Communication lets me be present daily. That’s what FaceTime is for,” Akon added.
