Al-Wasat reported on Wednesday that Al-Menfi received Tetteh and Deputy Chief of Mission for Political Affairs Stephanie Khoury at the Presidential Council headquarters in Tripoli. They discussed the latest developments in the security and military situation in Tripoli, and the challenges facing efforts for political calm and settlement in Libya. Tetteh expressed her deep appreciation for Mohamed Al-Menfi’s pivotal role in advancing national dialogue in Libya and his commitment to bringing parties to the negotiation table to establish security and stability foundations for a joint leadership to accomplish necessary national entitlements.

The meeting comes against the backdrop of security tensions in the capital Tripoli between the interim Government of National Unity on one side, and the Rada Special Deterrence Forces for counter-terrorism and organized crime on the other. Recently, both Al-Menfi and Tetteh held intensive meetings with various Libyan stakeholders to seek a settlement for the security situation in Tripoli.

The mission explained in a statement that it recognizes that “negotiations are still ongoing under the supervision of the Presidential Council,” calling on involved parties to “continue dialogue and discuss outstanding issues in good faith, in the best interest of Tripoli’s civilian residents who must be protected.” The mission warned that “renewed clashes will have dire consequences for Libya and its people,” noting that it will continue to support and offer its efforts to engage directly in the negotiations under the auspices of the Presidential Council.

The President of the Presidential Council and Supreme Commander of the Libyan Army, Mohamed Al-Menfi, held a meeting with the Chief of General Staff, Lieutenant General Mohamed Al-Haddad, to discuss developments in the security and military scene, calming efforts, and strengthening the ceasefire. Al-Menfi had earlier met with a delegation from the Central Communication Committee to discuss ways to enhance security, stability, the rule of law, and prevent a slide into armed confrontation.

The media office of the President of the Presidential Council stated that “the meeting was dedicated to discussing developments in the security and military scene, calming efforts, achieving stability, working to enhance the implementation of the ongoing ceasefire, and adhering to the instructions according to the directives of the Supreme Commander of the Army.”
