Alaska Storms Cause Widespread Damage

Starting from the eighth of October, a series of strong storms, including the remnants of Typhoon Halong, brought strong winds, record water levels, and widespread coastal and river flooding to northern, western, and southwestern Alaska. According to American media, Governor Dunleavy’s request mentioned that people should shelter in schools or urban areas due to damaged infrastructure. In the Kipnuk area, about 90% of buildings were destroyed, including vital facilities, while 35% of Kwethluk’s buildings were damaged, and surrounding areas reported significant damage to residential buildings and infrastructure. Politicians, including Senators Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski, sent a letter urging President Donald Trump to approve Governor Dunleavy’s request to declare a federal disaster. This would allow for the allocation of additional federal resources to support the affected areas.
