Algeria’s Response to Trump’s Western Sahara Stance

In his conversation with ‘Sputnik,’ he added that Trump’s support for the proposal was expected during his second term, but a statement from President Trump will not change anything on the ground, as was the case with his first tweet.

Regarding the measures his country might take towards Washington and the impact of American support on bilateral relations, especially since the issue caused significant tension in Franco-Algerian relations, the Algerian parliamentarian sees it as a concern between France and Spain. Algeria has taken some measures with them due to their involvement in the Western Sahara issue.

He believes that Washington fully understands the sensitivity of the Algerian stance, while his country will not currently take any actions towards Washington. They are waiting to see what the statements result in, whether they will turn into activities, projects, laws, or decisions at international levels. At that point, Algeria may move and take official measures and positions.

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump sent a message to the Moroccan King Mohammed VI on the occasion of Throne Day. He stressed ‘moving forward with shared priorities for peace and security in the region, particularly relying on the Abraham Accords, combating terrorism, and expanding trade cooperation for the benefit of both Americans and Moroccans,’ according to the Moroccan news agency.

In 2020, the then U.S. Ambassador to Rabat, David Fischer, announced that the Western Sahara would be included. Fischer said, ‘This map is a tangible representation of President Trump’s bold proclamation two days ago – recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.’
