According to the presidential decree, the delegation includes Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin, the heads of the parliamentary committees on international affairs Grigory Karasin and Leonid Slutsky, as well as the Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya.
Under the existing regional rotation system, the President of the 80th session of the General Assembly was elected by secret ballot from the group of Western European and other states. Baerbock received 167 votes, while former German diplomat Helga Schmid received seven votes, and 14 countries abstained from voting.
In her speech before the General Assembly following her election, Annalena Baerbock expressed her gratitude to the member states and the current President of the Assembly, Philemon Yang, pledging to build on his wise, inspiring, and unifying leadership. She added, “We live in challenging times. We are walking a tightrope of uncertainty,” referring to ongoing global crises and more than 120 armed conflicts.
