The embassy added in a statement to the Russian newspaper ‘Izvestia’ that the talks with the Russian side focused on restoring the functions of diplomatic missions in Moscow and Washington, rather than on a broader normalization or improvement of relations. It confirmed the intention to continue these negotiations in the future at a time suitable for both parties. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov had earlier stated to the agency that a new round of consultations between Moscow and Washington might take place before the end of the summer, adding that Russia does not wish to prolong the pause between rounds. It is noteworthy that Russia and the United States concluded in Istanbul last April the second round of talks regarding the full restoration of diplomatic missions’ functions. The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that both sides exchanged notes confirming the agreement on mutual commitment to facilitate banking and financial services for the missions, in addition to enabling Russia to pay its contributions to the budgets of the United Nations and other international organizations.
