Apple has announced the launch of its latest smartphone, the “iPhone 16,” which incorporates advanced artificial intelligence features. During the unveiling event, CEO Tim Cook emphasized that this next-generation device is specifically designed to leverage Apple Intelligence, the company’s new initiative aimed at enhancing personal technology.
“For years, AI and machine learning have played a critical role in delivering the features and experiences you love,” Cook explained, referring to the recently introduced Apple Intelligence. This powerful system is expected to have a transformative effect on user experiences.
Initially, users can expect enhancements such as AI-driven image editing and intelligent translations, among other minor creative improvements. However, Apple is not venturing into the more ambitious AI breakthroughs seen in the offerings of its competitors.
As the tech industry races to integrate AI into their products, Apple aims to position its smartphones as a vital battleground in this competition. With sales of iPhones slowing, the company hopes AI capabilities will encourage consumers to upgrade their devices.
Apple Intelligence will enhance the personal assistant Siri, making it more contextually aware and attuned to the user’s preferences. Craig Federighi, the company’s software development chief, stated that this advancement marks a significant evolution for Siri, making interactions feel more natural.
The beta version of Apple Intelligence will be released next month in English, available initially in the United States, with additional localized English versions coming in December. Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish editions are anticipated to launch next year.
The iPhone 16 will feature a new A18 chip and a redesigned aluminum case, which now includes a dedicated button for camera control. Pricing will start at $799 for the standard model and $899 for the iPhone 16 Plus. The Pro versions will be priced from $999 and $1,199 for the Pro Max.
In addition to the new iPhone, Apple introduced refreshed Apple Watch and Earbuds models focused on health and improved design. Notably, the new Apple Watch can detect chronic health conditions such as sleep apnea and emergency situations like falls, prompting urgent service calls.
Regarding the latest AirPods, Apple revealed new features that cater to hearing assistance, which have also been submitted for regulatory review in the U.S. Given the relatively stagnant momentum, Apple is eager to add innovative functions to stimulate iPhone sales, especially since revenue from iPhone sales dipped by 1% year-on-year to $39 billion from April to June.
Analyst Avi Greengart noted that by integrating AI capabilities, Apple is seeking to challenge expectations, suggesting that the iPhone launch represents more than just incremental hardware improvements.
