Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has shared new insights about Apple’s much-anticipated foldable iPhone in his latest Power On newsletter. This foldable device is set to launch in fall 2026, marking a bold entry into a new device category for Apple, and stands as one of the company’s most ambitious hardware projects.

A book-like foldable design

As reported by 9to5Mac, Gurman notes that the foldable iPhone will feature a book-style design, akin to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series. When closed, it will include an outer touchscreen between 5 to 6 inches, functioning like a typical iPhone. Upon opening, users will find a large 8-inch inner display, ideal for multitasking, productivity, and immersive media experiences.

A four-camera configuration

The device is planned to come equipped with four cameras:

  • A front-facing camera for use when closed

  • Two rear cameras (one main wide sensor and either ultra-wide or telephoto)

  • An inner camera on the foldable screen for selfies and video calls

This camera setup allows the foldable iPhone to function seamlessly as both a traditional iPhone and a tablet-like device when unfolded.

Possible return of Touch ID

One surprising feature might be the return of Touch ID. Recent iPhones exclusively use Face ID, but due to design constraints in the foldable’s compact form, the large TrueDepth camera system for Face ID isn’t feasible. Consequently, Apple may incorporate a side-button fingerprint sensor for authentication.

Modem, design, colors, and pricing

According to 9to5Mac, the newsletter mentions that the foldable will use Apple’s proprietary C2 modem, which follows the C1 chip in the iPhone 16e. This C2 modem promises faster speeds and will first appear in the 2025 iPhone 17 Air before being included in the foldable iPhone. Like Apple’s latest devices, it will rely solely on eSIM, omitting a SIM card slot.

Gurman reports that Apple’s first foldable will come in just two colors — black and white — reflecting a minimalist design for its first-generation model. Production is expected to increase in early 2026, with consumer availability in the fall.

Apple has not disclosed pricing details, but the foldable will likely be at the top of its price range. With premium Android foldables starting around $1,800, Apple’s version is expected to be similarly priced.

Future of iPhones

The foldable iPhone isn’t Apple’s only major design shift. Gurman indicates that the 2027 iPhone Pro lineup will boast a new all-glass design, representing a significant visual transformation. Nevertheless, this year’s iPhone 17 lineup will mostly resemble previous models, apart from a rectangular camera module on the back and the introduction of the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air.
