Bollywood star Akshay Kumar, who co-starred with him in numerous films, expressed his sorrow on social media, “Speechless with grief over Asrani Ji’s passing. Just a week ago, we shared a warm hug on the set of Haiwaan… His legendary comic timing was unparalleled. From classics like Hera Pheri to Bhagam Bhag, De Dana Dan, Welcome, and our upcoming films Bhoot Bangla and Haiwaan… I’ve learned so much from him. Our industry has suffered an immense loss.”
Akshay highlighted some of Asrani’s recent popular comedies. Beginning his acting journey in 1967, his career is one that few in Bollywood can rival. Asrani appeared in over 350 films across various genres and eras. While adept at serious and supporting roles, his comedic prowess made him a fan favorite.
Here’s a look at his most iconic comic roles:
1. Bawarchi: This 1972 film marked the start of a prolific partnership with Rajesh Khanna, lasting until 1991 across 25 films. In Bawarchi, Asrani portrayed Vishwanath Sharma, a music director who adapted English songs with Hindi lyrics. Bawarchi is among Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s acclaimed works.
2. Sholay: Before Sholay, Asrani had played numerous character roles, but this film secured his status as a top comedic performer. His eccentric jailer role in Ramesh Sippy’s 1975 classic immortalized him.
With a look inspired by Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator, Asrani’s line “Hum angrezon ke zamaane ke jailer hain!” became legendary.
3. Chupke Chupke: In the same year, Asrani played a supporting role in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s romantic comedy with Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan. His role as Prashant Kumar Srivastav, though small, significantly enhanced the film’s comedic charm.
4. Hera Pheri: Asrani became a familiar face in many Priyadarshan comedies. Hera Pheri (2000) remains one of Bollywood’s most successful comedies. Asrani played a frantic bank manager, holding his own alongside stars like Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, and Paresh Rawal.
5. Malamaal Weekly: Another Priyadarshan hit that achieved cult status in Hindi cinema. Despite a cast of talented performers, Asrani shone as Chokheylal, Kanhaiya’s father, in a film filled with hilarious attempts to win a lottery prize.
