In an interview with ‘EUobserver’, Borrell considered the mere discussion of reducing Israel’s access to the European scientific research program as the only measure currently on the table to be weak and insufficient. He said, “Even this simple measure has not been agreed upon by the EU countries yet… Is this all they have in light of what is happening?” He also criticized ongoing agreements with Israel to expand humanitarian access to Gaza, describing them as a “cynical excuse” to avoid imposing real sanctions.
The European Commission announced last Tuesday a proposal to partially suspend Israel’s participation in the ‘Horizon Europe’ program. However, it still requires the approval of a majority of member states. In a more severe stance, Borrell published a message on Friday evening on the ‘X’ platform, stating, “Let’s ensure we are not partners in the genocide in Gaza!”
Borrell called on the European Council to take a firm stance by immediately boycotting Israel, warning that continued silence represents a breach of the Union’s commitments and makes it a partner in crimes against humanity.
