The sporting community is in mourning following the passing of British boxing icon Ricky Hatton, who had been preparing for a comeback fight in Dubai this year.

Hatton, a former two-division world champion, died at 46, as confirmed by the World Boxing Association on Sunday.

The WBA honored him with a touching tribute on Instagram: “A true champion, an indomitable spirit, and a legend of the sport. Your legacy will endure in every fight and in the hearts of boxing fans worldwide.”

After retiring in 2012, Hatton struggled with depression and alcohol, yet according to a BBC report, he was gearing up for a return to the ring in Dubai.

“Hatton remained active in boxing until his death at 46, with plans for a December comeback in Dubai,” the report stated.

“Seeing such a legend return at his age would have been bittersweet, but now we mourn his loss.”

Throughout his 15-year career, Hatton secured the WBA, IBO, and IBF light-welterweight titles, as well as the WBA welterweight championship.

He maintained a perfect 43-0 record until 2007 when Floyd Mayweather Jr. handed him his first defeat in Las Vegas.

Hatton also faced defeat against Manny Pacquiao in 2009, yet his prowess inspired a new wave of British boxers, including Amir Khan.

“Today, we lost not only one of Britain’s finest boxers but also a friend, mentor, and warrior, Ricky Hatton,” Khan wrote on X.

“Ricky, thank you for your fights, your triumphs, your determination. You showed us what’s possible … you’ll always be remembered.”

Manchester City fans honored Hatton during their Premier League match against Manchester United, chanting his name at the Etihad.

City’s player Phil Foden, who scored in the 3-0 victory over United, dedicated the win to Hatton.

“I was motivated by him and his family,” Foden shared with Sky Sports.

Hatton, a lifelong City fan, often wore the team’s blue shorts in the ring.

“Ricky was among City’s most cherished supporters … our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends,” City expressed on Sunday.
