Legendary West Indies batsman Brian Lara praised young Indian opener Abhishek Sharma, describing him as “something special.” Despite his success in limited-overs cricket, Abhishek is eager to join the Indian Test team, according to Lara.
Lara shared his views during the CEAT Cricket Ratings event in Mumbai on Tuesday.
As a batting coach for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL during 2021 and 2022, Lara observed Abhishek’s evolution from a versatile player to a dynamic opener alongside Travis Head.
“I know Abhishek from my time with SRH during the Covid era, about three or four years back. He is an extraordinary young talent,” Lara said.
“He is truly special. Yuvraj Singh greatly influenced him, especially in his bat speed and striking ability. Even with his T20 and 50-over successes, he’s still determined to break into the Test team, which is fantastic. Watching him excel and reach new heights is gratifying. He’s someone I’ve grown to admire immensely.”
Abhishek was a standout performer during India’s victorious Asia Cup run, amassing 314 runs at an average of 44 and a 200 strike rate, featuring three fifties.
This year, in 12 T20Is, Abhishek scored 593 runs with a 49.41 average and a strike rate over 208.80, including a century and four fifties, with a notable 54-ball 135 against England in Mumbai.
In 24 T20Is, Abhishek has accumulated 849 runs across 23 innings, maintaining a 36.91 average and a 196.07 strike rate, with two centuries and five fifties, his top score being 135.
