BYD, the Chinese car manufacturer, unveiled a new megawatt charger in Dubai Festival City that can extend an electric vehicle’s range by up to 400km in just five minutes.
Long charging durations are a significant concern for EV users, but this innovation aims to enhance the viability of electric vehicles, noted Stella Li, BYD’s executive vice president and CEO for the Americas and Europe.
Although operational charging stations aren’t yet available, the demonstration showcased how quickly drivers could recharge their vehicles, akin to refueling at a gas station.

This was the first time such technology had been displayed outside of China.
“With just five minutes of megawatt charging, you can gain 400km of range. It’s like stopping at a gas station and grabbing a coffee,” Li stated at the event.
Expanding Reach Imminently
Li announced that starting next year, this system will be accessible to all electric vehicles, potentially encouraging more people to transition to EVs.
The company is collaborating with partners in the UAE and the broader Middle East to establish over 600 flash charging stations by the end of 2026, with plans still underway regarding the number in the Emirates.
‘UAE: A Hub for Innovation’
Li expressed that the UAE offers an excellent setting for introducing new technology. “This is where dreams turn into reality. Our philosophy, ‘Build Your Dreams,’ aligns perfectly with this country’s spirit,” she said.
These flash charging stations will feature a universal connector, allowing them to charge any electric vehicle, although not all vehicles may utilize the full speed.
EV manufacturers suggest that if these flash chargers are implemented as planned, they could significantly boost EV adoption in the UAE, aligning with the country’s Net Zero by 2050 goals. “Quicker charging could make electric vehicles more convenient for everyday use, addressing concerns over charging station wait times,” Li added.
Li also mentioned ongoing work on advanced technologies such as autonomous and intelligent driving systems to further enhance the regional driving experience.
