Chad Returns Stolen Vehicles to Sudan Amid Tensions

The electronic “Sudan Tribune” reported on Wednesday evening that last April, the Chadian authorities, in cooperation with Interpol, handed over a batch of these vehicles to Sudan based on reports from the Sudanese police. It is noted that the majority of the looted cars are high-value, modern model four-wheel drives.

The Chadian Director of Public Security and Immigration, Ali Ahmed Aghbash, explained in a speech during the handover of the vehicles to the Sudanese diplomatic mission that his country’s authorities affirm to their Sudanese counterparts their respect for regional and international commitments and duties. He urged the Sudanese authorities not to doubt his country’s intentions, emphasizing Chad’s respect and commitment to working diligently to address the issue of looted vehicles.

It is mentioned that relations between Sudan and Chad experienced severe tension due to accusations by Sudanese military leaders that the Chadian government was supporting the “Rapid Support Forces” and establishing logistical support centers within its borders for these forces.

Ali Ahmed Aghbash explained that after reports from the Sudanese police to Interpol, they began their mission to track the vehicles, noting that his country would not be a party to any breach of its regional commitments. The Chadian official stressed that monitoring and handing over the vehicles is evidence of his country’s commitment and fulfillment of its regional and international duties.

Relations between the two countries witnessed severe tension at the end of 2023 after repeated Sudanese accusations that Chad facilitated the transport of Emirati military and logistical aid to the Rapid Support Forces, accusations that Chad completely denied. The escalation reached its peak with the exchange of diplomatic expulsions between the two countries in December 2023, and bilateral relations reached the point of near-total boycott.
