Chloe Malle has been appointed as the new head of editorial content at American Vogue, succeeding Anna Wintour, who is stepping down after almost 40 years, the magazine announced on Tuesday.

Malle, aged 39, has dedicated over ten years to Vogue, most recently serving as the editor of Vogue.com and co-hosting “The Run-Through” podcast.

Daughter of actress Candice Bergen and filmmaker Louis Malle, Chloe began working full-time at Vogue in 2011 after stints at the New York Observer and freelancing. She has managed notable features, including a Naomi Biden wedding shoot and an interview with Lauren Sanchez.

At 75, Wintour is transitioning from her U.S. editorial responsibilities to concentrate on Condé Nast’s global expansion and significant events such as the Met Gala. She will continue as Vogue’s global editorial director and chief content officer at Condé Nast, the company behind Vanity Fair and GQ.

Since 1988, Wintour has been the defining voice of American Vogue, transforming the Met Gala into a major cultural event watched worldwide.

Almost inseparable from the Vogue brand, Wintour is believed to have inspired the character “Miranda Priestly,” portrayed by Meryl Streep in “The Devil Wears Prada”.

Her exit signifies a rare leadership transition at a publication she has shaped for nearly four decades, a period marked by both praise and controversy. In June, Wintour announced her intention to find new leadership for the American Vogue editorial team.
