The study, published in the scientific journal ‘JAMA’, included 200 patients suffering from persistent atrial fibrillation. After resetting their heart rhythm, participants were randomly divided into two groups: the first continued to drink at least one cup of coffee daily, while the second abstained entirely from caffeine for six months, according to ‘Science Daily’. Only 47% of the coffee group experienced recurrent episodes compared to 64% in the caffeine abstention group, indicating a significant reduction in risk (hazard ratio ≈ 0.61; P ≈ 0.01). There were no significant differences in serious complications such as heart attacks or strokes. It is noted that atrial fibrillation is a common disorder that causes rapid and irregular heartbeats and increases the risk of stroke and heart failure if left untreated. The results do not apply to those unaccustomed to or excessive consumers of caffeine. Caffeine may also trigger symptoms in some individuals, prompting them to consult a doctor. Experts emphasize the need for long-term studies to confirm the benefits over a longer period.
