Commvault, a top provider of cyber resilience and data protection for hybrid cloud environments, has unveiled two groundbreaking innovations to transform enterprise data utilization and protection in the AI era.

The launch of Data Rooms and Commvault’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) server marks a pivotal advancement, allowing businesses to securely integrate backup data with AI platforms and manage resilience tasks through natural language.

This development highlights the increasing momentum in the Middle East, where AI and data strategies are rapidly evolving, aligning with national visions like the UAE’s National AI Strategy 2031.

Data Rooms provide a secure setting for enterprises to safely connect reliable backup data to AI platforms or their own AI projects, like internal data lakes. It offers governed, self-service access with integrated classification and compliance controls, bridging the divide between data protection and activation and enabling organizations to convert backup data into AI-ready assets without adding risk or complexity.

With Data Rooms, authorized users can find and prepare data directly from backup sources in on-premises and cloud settings. Built-in governance ensures that approved datasets, compliant with access policies, can be safely shared and exported, with automatic classification, sensitivity tagging, and audit trails. Operating within Commvault Cloud’s zero-trust architecture, Data Rooms utilize role-based access controls (RBAC) and encryption for data security at rest and in transit. These measures assure organizations that their data is protected, governed, and traceable from backup to activation.

“Organizations are starting to see their historical data as a strategic asset, not just insurance,” stated Pranay Ahlawat, Chief Technology and AI Officer at Commvault. “Commvault Data Rooms allow enterprises to securely export their secondary data and leverage it with their chosen AI platform to unlock new possibilities for intelligence, innovation, and growth.”

Commvault also introduced the Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, a policy-driven link connecting enterprise systems with popular GenAI assistants like OpenAI’s ChatGPT Enterprise and Anthropic’s Claude. MCP allows users to interact with Commvault Cloud in natural language to manage resilience tasks. For instance, asking, “Is my DocuSign instance backed up?” could yield a response like, “No backup is set up yet. Would you like to create one?” MCP then executes authorized actions, adhering to enterprise policies. This innovation simplifies cyber resilience, enabling users to converse with Commvault Cloud as naturally as with a colleague, within the bounds of enterprise policies.

All conversational interactions with Commvault Cloud occur through the policy-based MCP server, which handles authentication, access, and encryption. Commvault does not use or train external AI models with customer data or inputs. Customer data remains protected under Commvault’s privacy and security policies, and external GenAI platforms operate under their own controls. These built-in safeguards ensure traceability, auditability, and compliance with enterprise-grade data protection standards, ensuring simplicity doesn’t compromise security.

“Commvault is advancing beyond conversational interfaces to enable agentic resilience where AI can act on behalf of teams, safely and transparently,” added Ahlawat. “With the Model Context Protocol, we provide enterprises with the foundation to automate recovery and protection workflows within the NIST Risk Management Framework’s guardrails – auditable, policy-driven, and role-based access controlled. This is how we merge simplicity and trust in the age of AI operations.”

Commvault’s MCP server will begin private early access in November at Commvault SHIFT 2025, with public early access slated for early 2026 and general availability planned for spring 2026. Conversational Resilience capabilities will align with supported enterprise GenAI platforms, including ChatGPT Enterprise and Claude. Further integrations with other GenAI assistants are under review.

The Commvault Data Rooms service is currently in early access, with general availability expected in early 2026, and pricing details to be announced then.
