She indicated that “this decision has sparked a wave of criticism within the Mossad, as well as from former high-ranking officials in the agency, who believe that Gofman lacks intelligence experience and does not have a background in organizational management.” According to the official statement, Gofman has held a series of leadership and operational positions, including serving as a fighter and commander in the Armored Corps, leading a battalion within the 75th Battalion of the 7th Brigade, and holding the position of special operations officer in the “Gash” formation (Division 36). He also led the “Etzion” Brigade, the 7th Brigade, and the “Habashim” Division (210), chaired the National Ground Training Center, and served as the head of the government’s operations headquarters in the territories before assuming his current position as the military secretary to the Prime Minister.

If the advisory committee, chaired by retired judge Asher Grunis, the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, approves the appointment, Gofman will become the second military officer appointed to a position within Israel’s intelligence agencies during Netanyahu’s tenure, following the appointment of Major General (res.) David Zini as head of the General Security Service “Shabak”, a decision that sparked widespread political controversy and reached the Supreme Court.

Estimates within the security establishment suggest that Netanyahu appreciates Barnea’s performance, especially in matters related to Lebanon, but he also leans towards making changes in the leadership of the Mossad as the extended term of office approaches its end.
