According to Resolution No. 62 of 2025, published in the Iraqi Official Gazette “Al-Waqa’i”, the committee adopted the explicit name Ahmad Hussein Al-Shara’a, his Syrian nationality, and his date of birth on October 29, 1982. It was confirmed that his movable and immovable assets had previously been frozen pursuant to the Terrorist Funds Freezing Committee’s Resolution No. 22 of 2019, based on his inclusion on the UN Security Council sanctions list.
Al-Shara’a’s rise to the presidency of Syria a year ago sparked widespread debate in Baghdad regarding previous arrest warrants attributed to him when he was known as “”, and as a leader of groups linked to Al-Qaeda in Iraq after 2003. Iraqi legal experts point to the existence of an arrest warrant and in absentia rulings related to armed operations within Iraqi territory.
Simultaneously, the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council issued a statement denying the authenticity of new documents circulating on social media, asserting they are forged, without definitively resolving the fate of the original warrant from previous years.
