According to officials, the deadly attack occurred on Saturday morning, about 100 meters from Long Reef Beach, located north of Sydney’s capital in the state of New South Wales, while the victim was surfing with friends. In response to the incident, the state’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development announced that the marine rescue organization known as ‘Surf Life Saving’ deployed drones and a helicopter to monitor the area and locate the shark. Additionally, more buoys equipped with satellite communication systems were installed, which notify authorities as soon as a shark is caught in their net. The department noted that an analysis was conducted on the victim’s surfboard by marine biologists specializing in sharks, concluding that the shark was between 3.4 and 3.6 meters long, likely responsible for the bloody attack, according to Western media. Data released by the operator of Taronga Zoo in Sydney revealed that Saturday’s attack was the fourth of its kind resulting in death in Australia during 2025. In March, another surfer was killed following a shark attack in shallow waters off the coast. It is noteworthy that Australia ranked second globally after the United States in the number of unprovoked shark attacks on humans during 2024, according to the ‘International Shark Attack File’ of the University of Florida.
