Following a dazzling opening ceremony and breathtaking fireworks for the UAE’s 54th National Day, the Desert Vipers held their composure at Dubai International Stadium to clinch a low-scoring ILT20 opener on Tuesday.

The Vipers achieved sweet revenge against Dubai Capitals, replaying last season’s final loss on the same ground earlier this year.

On Tuesday, the Vipers executed flawlessly after electing to bowl first.

Their bowlers delivered consistently, limiting the Capitals’ scoring chances and holding them to 150 for eight on a favorable batting pitch.

In their chase, the Vipers secured victory with four wickets and six balls remaining.

Wicketkeeper-batter Andries Gous (58 off 36 balls, 6 fours, 3 sixes) excelled in the powerplay, dismantling the Capitals’ bowlers with impressive stroke play during his 50-run opening partnership off just 28 balls with Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman (26 off 15 balls).

The Capitals saw hope for a comeback when the Vipers fell to 109 for four after losing quick wickets.

Despite losing more wickets, Dan Lawrence (19 not out off 16 balls) and Khuzaima Tanveer (12 not out off 8 balls) remained composed to lead the team to a deserved win.

Earlier, Capitals’ batsmen, including West Indies’ Rovman Powell (39 off 22 balls), couldn’t capitalize on their starts as the Vipers took wickets consistently.

Pakistan’s Naseem Shah (4-0-30-1) spearheaded the Vipers’ attack effectively, with David Payne (4-1-26-2), Noor Ahmad (4-0-25-2), and Khuzaima Tanveer (4-0-35-2) securing critical breakthroughs.

Gous earned man-of-the-match honors for his brilliant half-century.

“It was a bit sluggish at first, but it improved as we batted. I came in with confidence, and I aim to maintain it,” he said.

“Getting that first fifty sets a good tone for the tournament ahead, especially with strong teams in the fray.”
