Diwali Sparks and Golf Shine in Dubai 2026

As expatriates in Dubai and the UAE celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights, a new kind of spectacle is emerging in the sports world.

With fireworks lighting up the skyline, golf enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the 2026 Dubai Invitational. This prestigious bi-annual golf tournament, offering a $2.75 million prize, merges elite professional play with a Pro-Am format, and will return to Dubai Creek Resort from January 15–18.

The season kicks off with an epic showdown: Rory McIlroy vs. Tommy Fleetwood. These Ryder Cup teammates turned fierce competitors are set to intensify one of golf’s most exciting rivalries.

Fresh from remarkable seasons, McIlroy and Fleetwood will headline the event, marking an exhilarating start to the DP World Tour’s 2026 International Swing.

McIlroy, a five-time Major Champion, confirmed his return to Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, aiming to surpass his close second-place finish in 2024.

Fleetwood, who clinched the inaugural Dubai Invitational title with a dramatic one-shot victory, has also confirmed his participation. The event will feature 60 DP World Tour pros and 60 amateurs.

Rory’s Extraordinary Season

For McIlroy, 2025 was unforgettable, marking his quest for golfing greatness. He became the first European to complete the career Grand Slam, winning the Masters at Augusta. This added to his victories at the U.S. Open (2011), PGA Championships (2012, 2014), and The Open (2014). He also played a key role in Europe’s historic Ryder Cup win at Bethpage Black, their first on American soil in 13 years.

Ranked World No. 2, McIlroy leads the Race to Dubai standings and will begin 2026 with consecutive tournaments in the UAE: the Dubai Invitational, followed by the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, which he has won four times.

“I’m thrilled to start my year in Dubai,” said McIlroy. “The UAE has always been a great place for me, and I expect no different this time.

“Dubai Creek Resort was an exceptional host two years ago, and Abdulla (Al Naboodah) and his team organized a fantastic event. I was close to winning then, so I hope 2026 will be another great year, starting strong in the Middle East.”

Tournament host Abdulla Al Naboodah said: “Welcoming career Grand Slam winner Rory McIlroy back to Dubai Creek Resort for the 2026 Dubai Invitational is an honor.

“His participation enriches our world-class field, and we look forward to delivering another week of exceptional competition and hospitality.”

Fleetwood’s Breakthrough Year

While McIlroy was in the spotlight, Fleetwood wasn’t far behind. The Englishman had a stellar 2025, achieving new milestones on both sides of the Atlantic.

He secured his first PGA Tour win at the Tour Championship, clinching the FedEx Cup with an 18-under finish. Recently, he won the DP World India Championship, sharing the victory celebration with his son Frankie.

After years of near-misses, Fleetwood’s season solidified his status as one of the sport’s most consistent performers and McIlroy’s closest rival in Europe.

Before focusing on Dubai, both players will participate in the DP World Tour’s final stretch in the UAE. The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship at Yas Links will feature the top 70 players competing for spots in the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates, with the top 50 contenders vying for the season crown.

Once the dust settles, attention shifts to the Dubai Invitational, where 60 DP World Tour pros and 60 amateurs will compete in a format blending world-class golf with local hospitality. The first three days feature a Pro-Am, with the final day for professionals only.
