Reaching New Heights

When the Dubai Fountain debuted on May 8, 2009, the night was alive with Emirati and Arab music as Dubai elevated its stature with this new marvel.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice-President and Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, officially opened the fountain, drawing large crowds. The launch fulfilled Sheikh Mohammed’s vision of “thinking bigger and better,” said Mohamed Alabbar, chairman of Emaar Properties.

Located on the 30-acre Burj Khalifa lake, spectators were entranced by melodies and water jets reaching up to 500 feet.

Visible from over 20 miles away, this display is a beacon for Dubai, known for its brilliant lights.

According to Khaleej Times, over 4,000 participants from 100 nationalities entered a naming competition from July 1 to September 15, 2008. Although it was only open to UAE residents, entries came from worldwide, highlighting Dubai’s global appeal.

Names suggested captured Dubai’s essence, and the winning name — Dubai Fountain — was selected by a panel of Emaar management, community leaders, and project experts, overseen by Dubai’s Department of Economic Development.

‘Heartbeat of Downtown Dubai’

Since its debut on May 8, 2009, the world’s largest choreographed fountain, crafted by California-based WET, creators of the Fountains of Bellagio in Las Vegas, has been the core of Downtown Dubai, charming nightly visitors with synchronized displays of water, music, and lights. Even during the day, it complements the towering Burj Khalifa and sprawling Dubai Mall.
