This new material protects food from moisture, microbes, and spoilage, while being environmentally friendly and safe for consumers. This discovery offers an alternative to traditional plastic packaging and helps reduce environmental pollution. Food packaging accounts for nearly half of global industrial plastic production, with a significant portion used for packaging perishable goods like meat and dairy products. However, the lifespan of traditional petroleum-derived plastic is usually short, yet it remains in the environment for decades or centuries, causing widespread pollution. In contrast, the bio-plastic developed by the research team meets environmental and food safety goals, as reported by the Russian Science Gateway. Russian scientists have designed transparent, single-layer films with smooth, defect-free surfaces that meet strict local “GOST” and international standards for food packaging. The new bio-plastic packaging promises to significantly reduce plastic pollution while ensuring food safety.
