Egypt is hosting an official meeting of the Group of Twenty (G20) in Cairo from September 1 to 3, 2025. This is the first time an official group meeting has been held outside the member states since its founding in 1999. The personal representative of the President of the Republic to the Group of Twenty and Assistant Foreign Minister said that this exceptional event crowns Egypt’s distinguished participation as a “guest state” in the group’s meetings for the third consecutive year and the fifth overall. He confirmed that this comes as an appreciation of its regional weight and its tangible contribution to addressing international issues and the efforts it makes to push for multilateral negotiations, taking into account the concerns and priorities of developing countries, especially African ones, and raising their voice in international and regional forums.

He added: “In the Group of Twenty, we always seek to set solutions that include everyone, without neglecting any party. Therefore, our negotiations must translate into clear and effective plans to address food security challenges worldwide.” He stressed the importance of employing technology and artificial intelligence to increase agricultural productivity, especially in countries suffering from resource scarcity or climate challenges. Al-Etrebi pointed to the G20’s ability to support the international community and the United Nations in finding sustainable solutions to these complex issues, confirming that water security should occupy a central place in the group’s discussions, given its direct impact on food security and global stability.
