Former champion Emma Raducanu made strides in overcoming her recent US Open struggles, securing her first win at the tournament since her 2021 triumph by defeating Japan’s Ena Shibahara 6-1, 6-2 in Sunday’s first round.
The Briton had previously failed to progress past the first round in her last two appearances after winning the title as a qualifier four years ago, but delivered a nearly flawless performance against Shibahara this time.
Raducanu will next face the winner of the match between 24th seed Veronika Kudermetova and Indonesian qualifier Janice Tjen.
“It’s my first win here since 2021, so it’s extra special,” said Raducanu, who recently teamed up with new coach Francisco Roig.
“First rounds are always tough, especially in a Grand Slam.”
Raducanu dominated the opening set with just four unforced errors, winning the first five games as her Japanese opponent struggled, committing two early double faults.
She maintained her strong start in the second set, winning the first four games and saving the only break point she faced in the sixth game, ultimately forcing an error from Shibahara on match point from the baseline.
This year, Raducanu has elevated her game, reaching the Washington Open semifinals last month and pushing world number one Aryna Sabalenka to three sets in Cincinnati’s third round.
“I see the progress on the practice court,” she said. “I feel like it’s leading somewhere.”
