Etihad Airways plans to invest $10 billion (Dh36.7 billion) over the next five years in new aircraft, while continuing to hire 2,500 employees annually, as announced by its CEO on Monday.
“In just about three years, we’ve doubled in size. We’ve announced 31 destinations, evolving from an airline that was at the bottom of profitability rankings three years ago. We’re set to invest $10 billion in new aircraft over the next five years to double our size, with strong cash flow,” said Antonoaldo Neves at the Abu Dhabi Finance Week panel.
Addressing a question about a potential IPO, he mentioned it’s “just another way to finance” the airline’s expansion.

“We’ve begun paying dividends, enabling us to finance growth through our own cash flow. An IPO isn’t our ultimate goal. Our duty is to be ready for public offering when our shareholders deem it appropriate,” he added.
“Globally, profitable airlines are buying back shares. From governance, balance sheet, and strategic viewpoints, Etihad is prepared, but going public depends on shareholder decisions.”
The UAE’s national carrier ordered 32 Airbus widebody aircraft at the Dubai Airshow 2025.
Hiring over 2,500 annually
He noted that when ADQ became a shareholder, it tasked the airline with delivering exceptional customer experiences while generating profits.
“Airlines are crucial for cities’ economic growth. We’re expanding rapidly, hiring over 2,500 people yearly, which is feasible only if we are profitable. Our role in Abu Dhabi’s GDP is significant, achievable through financial sustainability and enhanced customer experiences,” he stated.
He attributed the growth of UAE national carriers to a 7-8% population increase.
“Capital allocation must be timely and strategic to support growth,” he concluded.
