Dubai Film Festival: A Platform for Local Talent

Local filmmakers are hopeful that the event will provide them with a shared platform to showcase their films to an international audience.

With an expected attendance of hundreds from the global film community, the festival will highlight some of the finest global and regional films.

Dr. Alfred N. Mutua, Assistant Professor at Zayed University’s College of Communication and Media Sciences, believes the festival can motivate local filmmakers to continue creating films passionately while enhancing Dubai’s reputation as a Middle Eastern filmmaking hub.

“I hope the festival equally prioritizes local films alongside renowned international ones. This would inspire young filmmakers in the region and promote the UAE as a center for film production and post-production,” he stated.

The emerging local talent was highlighted with the premiere of “And the Desert Smiled,” the first feature film entirely created by a UAE-based team.

Young filmmakers are also eager to meet industry leaders, providing them a chance to exchange expertise.

“I plan to showcase one of my films shot entirely in the UAE and am eager to meet renowned filmmakers for insights on improving my craft. DIFF will encourage more local women to pursue filmmaking, highlighting the quality of films produced here,” said Alunood Ahli, 21, a filmmaker.

Media professionals see the event as a prime opportunity to learn from respected filmmakers. Raja Al Joodar, 23, a Documentary Production Assistant, remarked: “I am excited to attend workshops by international filmmakers. Watching diverse films will broaden our filmmaking perspectives and as beginners, it’s a chance to exchange ideas with industry leaders.”

Dr. Mutua emphasized that the festival should address local issues while establishing Dubai as a filmmaker hub. “The festival gives a voice to emerging Arab filmmakers, but more should be done to cultivate filmmaking, boosting the economy and creating jobs,” he noted.

The five-day festival, from December 6-11, will feature gala evenings, with “Arabian Nights” showcasing 20 contemporary Arab films.

A special sidebar will present Arab short films by emerging filmmakers at DIFF 2004.
