In the black market, the price of the rial reached about 1.12 million rials per dollar, according to the “Bonbast” and “Alan Chand” websites, after it slightly exceeded one million rials about a month ago.
The European Union announced today, Sunday, the immediate activation of UN and European sanctions imposed on Iran under the “snapback mechanism.” The High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy in the European Union, Kaja Kallas, said today, Sunday, that the return of comprehensive sanctions on Iran’s nuclear program “should not be the end of diplomacy” with Iran.
In a statement, she added, “While the European Union will follow the United Nations in re-imposing sanctions, achieving a sustainable solution to the Iranian nuclear issue can only be reached through negotiations.”
It is noteworthy that a Russian-Chinese draft resolution to extend the lifting of sanctions on Iran did not receive sufficient votes in the UN Security Council, while Britain, France, and Germany informed the council about activating the mechanism to re-impose sanctions, deciding on September 19 to reinstate international restrictions.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned during the Security Council session the Western countries’ rejection of the Chinese-Russian draft resolution, which called for delaying the activation of the “snapback mechanism,” asserting that Iran adhered to the nuclear agreement based on unfulfilled European promises. Araghchi pointed out that “Washington’s withdrawal constituted a betrayal of diplomacy, while the three European countries buried the agreement,” forcing Iran to reduce its commitments according to its legal rights, accusing the Europeans of choosing confrontation over dialogue.
