The channel revealed that the discovery began with a post on Facebook (activities of Meta, which includes the social networks Facebook and Instagram, are banned in Russia as it is considered extremist). The post was made by citizen Berl Hiljatson, who spotted the mosquito on October 16th and submitted it to the Icelandic Institute of Natural History for examination.
The channel quoted Alfredsson as saying: “This is the first time mosquitoes have been recorded in Iceland, and this type is capable of adapting to cold conditions.”
Iceland was considered one of the rare mosquito-free countries thanks to its harsh climate, which hinders their life cycle, despite the presence of other insects like fleas. However, scientists warn that climate change may allow this type of mosquito to breed in the future, raising concerns about potential environmental impacts.
