A flydubai aircraft was involved in an accident at Velana International Airport (MLE) in the Maldives, confirmed a spokesperson for the Dubai airline to Khaleej Times on Thursday.

The airline issued a statement confirming that all passengers safely exited the aircraft and were rebooked on the next available flight.

“Our aircraft at Velana International Airport (MLE) encountered a ground incident on December 4. All passengers and crew safely disembarked at the terminal. We have arranged alternative flights for passengers while the aircraft undergoes a detailed inspection,” stated a flydubai spokesperson.

The accident reportedly damaged the aircraft’s wing structure. The aircraft will undergo necessary repairs to comply with regulatory standards and be deemed airworthy.

The Maldives is a top tourist destination for UAE residents and international travelers.

Earlier reports from Khaleej Times indicated that due to congestion at the main airport, the Maldives is expanding Velana International Airport to accommodate the rising number of international tourists.

“Currently, there is congestion, but our new terminal, which can accommodate 7 million tourists, will open by the end of the year, reducing these issues,” stated Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Tourism and Environment in the Maldives, in an interview with Khaleej Times earlier this year.

This week, aviation media reported that an Emirates Airbus A380 was damaged at Manchester Airport, UK, after being struck by a fuel tanker, resulting in a hole in the engine cowling. Khaleej Times contacted Emirates for a statement.

“The safety of our passengers and crew is our utmost priority at all times,” reiterated the flydubai spokesperson following the Maldives incident.
