Recent operations in Fujairah have led to the seizure of six fishing vessels illegally operating within the Bird Island Reserve, marking a significant enforcement effort.

The Fujairah Environment Authority (FEA) reported that these boats were apprehended during routine field inspections as part of a continuous monitoring initiative.

Upon discovery, legal proceedings were initiated in collaboration with relevant authorities. The FEA’s monitoring system, which incorporates daily oversight, scheduled inspections, and advanced surveillance technologies, enables early detection of illegal activities, according to FEA Director Asila Al Mualla. She highlighted that fishing within marine reserves constitutes a severe environmental breach with legal repercussions.

Al Mualla also noted the authority’s swift response to citizen and diver reports concerning actions that harm marine life or endanger sea users.

Strategic Priority

Protecting Fujairah’s natural reserves is a strategic priority, as these areas are vital habitats for coral reefs, small fish, and rare or endangered species. Illegal fishing disrupts food chains, depletes fish stocks, and damages coral structures, which serve as marine shelters.

She warned that fishing near diving sites poses risks to divers and sea users due to potential entanglements or accidents with fast-moving boats. This threat affects both human safety and marine health.

Guarding reserves against unregulated fishing is crucial for environmental sustainability, ensuring fish populations can recover and thrive, maintaining marine ecosystem balance, and supporting food security.

Additionally, these efforts bolster the blue economy by promoting eco-tourism and sustainable diving that emphasizes observation over exploitation.

Al Mualla stressed the importance of continued coordination with relevant agencies for effective enforcement. She reaffirmed that the FEA will not tolerate violations harming the marine environment and urged compliance with environmental laws to protect Fujairah’s natural resources for future generations. The crackdown underscores the emirate’s dedication to preserving its unique marine biodiversity while balancing human activities with environmental conservation.
