Gen-Z and the Shift from Traditional Goals

Just as we often focus only on short-term gains in our careers, wanting immediate rewards for our efforts, our personal spending habits reflect the same short-sightedness.

Gen-Z is known for their spending, saving, and investing habits, which occur on a smaller scale compared to older generations. Despite the increased accessibility of stocks and the lowered barriers to entry with digital credit cards and sports betting, many young people find themselves limited to only using these accessible apps.

High-stakes investing or working in finance remains out of reach for most due to the global concentration of financial hubs. Yet, for just a fraction of their paycheck, individuals can experiment with cryptocurrencies or seek thrills from gambling apps promising quick wins to entice continued play.

This trend is fueled by the rise of small businesses and entrepreneurship, amplified by media portraying markets as games for the shrewd rather than deeply rooted systems of wealth disparity. While famines might not always be man-made, like in Gaza, many regions suffer from food shortages due to climate change impacts.

People aspire to climb the economic ladder, feeling validated by increasing numbers, believing their uniqueness drives success. However, reliance on apps, whether for gambling or convenience, leads to isolation, reducing human connection.

Today’s financial literacy extends beyond credit and budgeting. It involves understanding our role within this system, as many with comfortable salaries raise their children to perpetuate these beliefs.

Despite oil depletion and the undeniable value of entrepreneurship, the focus must ultimately shift to improving the conditions for those at the bottom of society rather than enriching the elite. For Gen-Z, financial literacy means knowing your place within the system and avoiding pitfalls that complicate life.

The key takeaway is that professional life is merely work; true life comprises love, milestones, and friendships. As we navigate and aim to improve or innovate within this system, remember that life transcends money and credit scores.
