Global Online Marriages via Abu Dhabi App

Couples worldwide can now marry through Abu Dhabi’s app, without visiting the emirate, as the project leader revealed to AFP on Tuesday.

While online marriages are still a novel concept, Ukraine introduced a similar service last year for couples separated by conflict to marry via its government app.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the UAE allowed online marriage ceremonies for residents.

However, the latest version aims for broader accessibility, says Mohamed Al Askar, head of Abu Dhabi’s TAMM app.

“It’s accessible to everyone. Anyone wishing to marry in Abu Dhabi, regardless of nationality, can use the online service,” he told AFP at Dubai’s Gitex tech fair.

“Users can complete the entire process online without visiting any location. We are pioneers in this field.”

For Dh800 ($218), users can fill online forms, submit necessary documents, hire an officiant, and even arrange a virtual ceremony within 24 hours, he explained.

This service caters to Emirati citizens, foreign residents, and even non-residents with a local lawyer or representative.

Notably, the UAE is the only Gulf nation permitting non-religious marriages, although this is limited to foreigners.

The marriage function joins over 1,000 government services available on the updated TAMM app for emirate residents.
